Crane Rental in Dumas, TX
We bring cranes and heavy equipment to Dumas from Amarillo, a trip the City of Dumas puts at 45 miles, to the county seat of Moore County, where US highways 87 and 287 meet. The work here follows what the county produces. The Handbook of Texas sums up the local mix as "Several feedlots, grain elevators, beef packers, and fertilizer plants," Valero runs its McKee Refinery 45 miles north of Amarillo, and Beef Magazine reported on February 27, 2026 that JBS had broken ground on an expansion of its beef plant at Cactus. The Census Bureau put the population of Dumas at 14,501 in 2020 and estimated 14,862 for July 2025.
Each section below takes one crane class or machine, names the Dumas site, road or rule that shapes it, and links the service page that holds its specifications, any published prices and general rules. A crane goes out operated, with an operator who must meet OSHA's section 1926.1427, or bare, in which case the person you put in the seat has to meet it. Equipment rents by the day, week or month. Our written quote is free and spells out the class or machine, the minimum hours or rental period, the run up from Amarillo, any permits, escorts or mats, and the tax line; our cost page for crane and equipment rental lists the national ranges to hold it against.

What Moore County Makes and How It Shapes a Dumas Lift
Fuel and gas make up one side of industry around Dumas. Valero's McKee Refinery page places the plant on 5,000 acres 45 miles north of Amarillo, gives a throughput capacity of 200,000 barrels per day and about 376 employees, and lists gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and asphalt as its products. Valero adds that a wind farm of 33 turbines, running from 2009 on, supplies the refinery with 50 MW. The Handbook of Texas credits Moore County with large quantities of natural gas and, in its history, two-thirds of the nation's helium, and it notes carbon black plants that ran on the oilfields' sour gas. The Dumas EDC says Dumas "was once the world leader in helium production," and its April 2018 employer table lists Continental Carbon, a carbon black maker.
Beef and grain fill out the map. Beef Magazine's report says the JBS work at Cactus adds a new fabrication floor and "an expanded ground beef room," with completion expected by early 2027, at a plant of more than 3,600 team members; the Handbook dates the town of Cactus to World War II. The Dumas EDC's table of largest industrial employers, revised April 2018, gives full-time counts of 3,232 for JBS and its tannery, 450 for Faria Dairy and 58 for Cactus Feedyard. The Handbook names fed beef, corn, wheat, grain sorghum and stocker cattle as Moore County's chief farm products and places Dumas at the heart of one of the state's main grain sorghum producing areas.
Highways, rail and the airport decide how machines arrive. The Dumas EDC calls US 287 and US 87 "major 4-lane highways." TxDOT's I-27 feasibility study from Amarillo to Dumas looked at bringing US 87/US 287 up to interstate standards from Loop 335 in Amarillo to a point north of Dumas at US 287; TxDOT's FAQ on the study puts that route at 57 miles and expected the study to be completed in July 2025. West of town, TxDOT's US 87 project would turn about 19.8 miles of two-lane highway into a four-lane divided one, but its page says no construction funding is identified. The EDC says the BNSF line passes through Dumas and that Texas Northwest (TXNW) builds trains daily in its 6000-car system. The airport data table on the EDC's Moore County Airport page puts the airport, DUX, 2 miles west of Dumas and lists Runway 1/19 at 6001 by 100 feet.
The ground is open and mostly level. The Handbook of Texas entry for Moore County describes "nearly level prairies varied by the Canadian River brakes," with sandy and loam soils and elevations from 2,900 to 3,700 feet. Storms are the hazard to plan around. The National Weather Service office in Amarillo says the strongest storm of Aug. 2, 2025 was moving toward Cactus, Sunray and Dumas while "producing what was likely 90 to 100 mph straight line winds," and that "Powerlines snapped between Sunray and Dumas." Its Panhandles climate guide places the largest hail in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles at Sunray on June 12, 2010. Amarillo's month-by-month wind normals, which a lift schedule starts from, are on our wind, weather and ground data page.

Cranes for Dumas and Moore County Jobs, Class by Class
Every crane for a Dumas job starts in Amarillo, so the first question is whether it drives itself or rides a trailer. A truck crane or an all-terrain crane covers the 45 miles under its own power; a rough-terrain crane, a carry deck and a crawler's components are hauled. A crane wider or heavier than Texas allows without a permit travels under a Texas Department of Motor Vehicles permit for unladen lift equipment, and the trip shows on the quote as its own line. Borger's refinery and chemical plants, where the roads and rules differ, are covered on our page on crane work in Borger.
Truck Cranes for Dumas Streets, Shops and Paved Plant Roads
A hydraulic truck crane suits a Dumas lift made from pavement: a street, a shop apron, a commercial lot or a paved road inside a plant. It drives itself up US 87/US 287 and sets its outriggers, the steel legs it extends onto pads, where it parks. In town, the street is the catch. Ordinance 1180, the City of Dumas rule for construction in the right-of-way, requires a permit for work that closes a nonresidential traffic lane and says lane closures on major thoroughfares "will be limited after 9:00 a.m. and before 3:30 p.m." The sections we read do not mention cranes, so ask the City's Building Department whether a curbside pick on a main street falls under them before you set the date. The truck crane classes and how to read their load charts are covered under mobile crane rental.
All-Terrain Cranes for Heavy Picks at Dumas-Area Plants
An all-terrain crane fits a Moore County job when a truck crane runs out of capacity or reach, yet the crane still has to drive itself in and set up on a plant road or a pad that is still being built. The big sites here are the refinery Valero lists at 5,000 acres and the Cactus beef plant with its expansion. A long AT boom also brings in the airport: Moore County Airport lies 2 miles west of town, so a tall pick on that side waits until we have run the boom height against 14 CFR 77.9 and told you whether Form 7460-1 must be filed. Wind gets its own check on a long boom, and under OSHA's section 1926.1417(n) that call belongs to the competent person. For AT sizes, counterweight trucks and escorts, see our all-terrain crane options.
Rough-Terrain Cranes for Dumas Yards and Unpaved Plant Units
A rough-terrain crane is the Dumas answer when the crane must work off the pavement and move between picks on one site: a grain elevator yard, a feedlot, a fertilizer plant or an unpaved unit inside a refinery. An RT is slow on the highway, so it rides a trailer the 45 miles from Amarillo and drives only once it is inside the gate. Moore County's sandy and loam soils lie on nearly level prairie that the Canadian River brakes interrupt, and OSHA's section 1926.1402 puts the site's controlling entity in charge of readying that ground, "firm, drained, and graded" to the crane maker's specifications, with mats or blocking where the soil falls short. Our rough-terrain crane breakdown covers mats, pads and RT sizes.
Crawler Cranes for Long Builds Around Dumas and Cactus
A crawler crane belongs on a Moore County job only when many heavy picks will be made from one prepared footprint over a long stay, because it arrives as several truckloads and is put together on site under OSHA's assembly rules in sections 1926.1403 and 1926.1404. In the Dumas area, the plant build in the news is the JBS expansion at Cactus, expected to be completed by early 2027. Two local checks come with a lattice boom: the FAA's notice criteria for a boom near Moore County Airport, with any Form 7460-1 submitted at least 45 days before the boom goes up, and storms like the one the Weather Service documented on Aug. 2, 2025. Transport loads, assembly and ground bearing for the class are explained in crawler crane rental.
Boom Trucks for Dumas Rooftops, Farm Shops and Grain Sites
A boom truck handles the lighter lifts around Dumas: rooftop units, trusses, steel and signs in town, and equipment and parts at farm shops and grain sites in a county whose chief crops include corn, wheat and grain sorghum. It is a crane built on a commercial truck, so it drives up from Amarillo, works from its own outriggers at the curb or in a yard, and leaves when the pick is done. The FAA treats it as temporary construction: its Part 77 page lists "Cranes, Boom Trucks" among the examples, so a boom truck lifting near Moore County Airport gets the same notice check as a larger crane. For truck ratings, license classes and the job-guide prices, read boom truck rental.
Carry Deck Cranes for Work Inside Dumas and Cactus Plants
A carry deck crane picks a load, carries it and sets it inside a plant fence, where a truck crane's outrigger spread will not fit. That is the work Manitowoc's Grove line names for the class, "plant maintenance and material handling," and the plants around Dumas cover the range: Valero's refinery making gasoline, jet fuel, diesel and asphalt, the JBS beef plant at Cactus, Continental Carbon's carbon black plant and the fertilizer plants the Handbook of Texas lists. A carry deck comes up from Amarillo on a trailer and works under its maker's ratings for outriggers, pick and carry and the deck. Those ratings and OSHA's rule on traveling with a load are spelled out in our carry deck crane guide.
Lift Plans for Dumas Picks Near Lines, Lanes and Storms
A written lift plan for a Dumas pick settles the load's weight and rigging, the crane's spot, the radius and the signals, then adds three local checks. The first is power lines. If the crane, its hoist line or the load could pass inside 20 feet of a power line carrying 350 kV or less, OSHA's section 1926.1408 makes the employer pick one of three protections, and under chapter 752 of the Texas Health and Safety Code nobody works inside the six-foot zone around a high-voltage line until its operator has notice "at least 48 hours before the work begins" and a safeguard is agreed. The second, for a pick from a main street, is asking the City whether Ordinance 1180's lane-closure hours apply. The third is weather, since the competent person must adjust for wind under section 1926.1417. Standard and critical lift plans, signals and signal persons are covered in rigging and lift planning.
Heavy Haul and Machinery Moves Between Amarillo and Dumas
Heavy haul to Dumas is a 45-mile run on the highways the Dumas EDC calls "major 4-lane highways," and the number of lanes changes the escort rule. TxDMV wants one escort vehicle once a load passes 14 feet of width, up to 16 feet: in front on a two-lane highway, behind on a multi-lane one. West of Dumas, though, TxDOT's US 87 project page describes US 87 there as a two-lane facility, so our reading is that a load in that band headed that way would need its escort in front for that leg. Anything beyond the legal limits moves only under a TxDMV permit. Moves inside a Moore County plant pair the trailer with a carry deck or rigging. Permits, flags and holiday limits are set out under machinery moving and heavy haul.
Heavy Equipment Rental in Dumas and Moore County
Rental machines reach Dumas on a trailer from Amarillo and stay for the day, week or month you book, with delivery and pickup listed on the quote. Every machine ships with its manufacturer's operating information. Anyone running a forklift, a telehandler or an aerial lift should already have the training OSHA and ANSI/SAIA call for, and we ask about it when you book. Any digging starts with Texas 811: the call goes in at least two business days before the work, weekends and holidays excluded, and inside Dumas that call must come before the City will issue a right-of-way permit.
Excavators for Dumas Utility Trenches and Plant Digs
An excavator rented for Dumas digs utility trenches, footings and plant foundations, and in a street or alley the paperwork comes before the bucket. Ordinance 1180 lists excavation and boring among the right-of-way work that needs a City permit, and section 3.031(a) holds the permit until you have called the state's "Call Before You Dig" line at 811. In a county the Handbook credits with large quantities of natural gas, the locate marks matter: Texas 811's FAQ says APWA and industry practice set 18 inches on either side of a marked utility as a reasonable tolerance zone. Mini against full-size machines and OSHA's trench rules are compared in excavator rental.
Skid Steers and Track Loaders for Dumas Feedlots and Yards
In Moore County, skid steers and compact track loaders work the feedlots, the dairy, grain elevators and plant yards that the Handbook of Texas and the Dumas EDC list for the area. Caterpillar counts agriculture among the uses it names for its compact track loaders, along with general construction, landscaping and snow removal. Tires or tracks is the first choice, and the sandy and loam soils the Handbook describes make the ground under the machine part of that decision. OSHA's rollover-protection rule in section 1926.1000 reaches rubber-tired skid-steer equipment built after July 15, 2019. Rated operating capacity and ground pressure figures sit with our skid steer and CTL rentals.
Telehandlers for Dumas Plant Sites and Farm Buildings
A telehandler lifts pallets and materials up and out to a roof, a deck or a platform from rough ground, the reach a Dumas plant site or farm building needs when a forklift's mast stops short. OSHA's construction training page lists "extended-reach forklift trucks" among the equipment used in the industry, and OSHA's powered industrial truck rule requires training before anyone operates one, an evaluation "at least once every three years," and the employer's certification that both were done. Capacities at full height and at full reach, and where a crane is the better tool, are set out under telehandler rental.
Boom Lifts for Work at Height in Dumas Plants and Elevators
A boom lift puts a worker up and out over equipment or a roof edge, the reach a Dumas job needs at a grain elevator, a plant structure or a building's upper wall. OSHA's aerial lift fact sheet tells crews to "Use a body harness or a restraining belt with a lanyard attached to the boom or bucket," to "Treat all overhead power lines and communication cables as energized," keeping 10 feet or more away, and not to run the lift in winds above the maker's recommendation. Texas adds the six-foot law for high-voltage lines in its Health and Safety Code, chapter 752. Wind is the daily check around Dumas: Amarillo's National Weather Service normals put the yearly average at 13.6 mph, highest in March and April. Articulating against telescopic booms, with platform heights, are compared under boom lift rental.
Scissor Lifts for Indoor and Slab Work in Dumas Buildings
A scissor lift raises workers straight up on a guarded platform, which suits ceiling, lighting and wall work inside Dumas shops, warehouses and plant buildings, including new floor space such as the fabrication floor JBS is adding at Cactus. OSHA's August 1, 2000 letter puts scissor lifts under its scaffold standard rather than its aerial lift rules, and says neither scaffold section requires workers to tie off when the guardrails are kept in good order. Outdoors on the open Moore County plain, OSHA's scaffolding eTool says lifts rated for outdoor use "are generally limited to wind speeds below 28 miles per hour." Slab and rough-terrain models are compared under scissor lift rental.
Forklifts for Dumas Plant Stores, Elevators and Farm Yards
A forklift moves palletized stock in Dumas plant storerooms and warehouses, and a rough-terrain model does the same work on elevator and farm yards; OSHA's eTool calls that kind Class VII, "typically intended for use on unimproved natural terrain," and warns that the label is no promise the truck can handle every surface. Toyota says its cushion tires are "specifically designed for smooth indoor surfaces" and its pneumatic tires are "ideal for outdoor environments with gravel, dirt, or uneven surfaces," which is the split between a Dumas warehouse and a fertilizer or grain yard. Under OSHA's rule 1910.178(l), each operator is trained before driving one and evaluated again no less often than every three years. Mast heights and capacities by model are listed with forklift rental.
Backhoes and Wheel Loaders for Dumas Service Lines and Stockpiles
A backhoe loader digs a service-line trench, loads the spoil and backfills with one machine, which suits a single utility repair in a Dumas street or alley. In the right-of-way, Ordinance 1180 also wants public works told 48 hours ahead that construction is ready to proceed, on top of the permit and the 811 call. A wheel loader, with no digging arm, shifts bulk material across elevator, feedlot and plant yards. CASE dig depths and Volvo bucket sizes are listed with backhoe and wheel loader rental.
Dozers for Dumas-Area Site Pads, Roads and Pens
A dozer clears, cuts and grades ground in Moore County, where the Handbook of Texas describes nearly level prairie broken by the Canadian River brakes. Grading counts as digging under Texas law when it goes deep enough: Utilities Code section 251.002 counts mechanized work that disturbs soil "to a depth of 16 or more inches" as excavation, so the 811 call comes before the blade. Crawler tractors are named in OSHA's rollover-protection subpart, section 1926.1000, and section 1926.602 requires seat belts. Blade sizes, ground pressure and the published dozer range are on our dozer hire page.
Ordinance 1180, Power Lines and FAA Notice for Dumas Lifts
The City of Dumas governs work in its streets and right-of-way through Ordinance No. 1180, Construction in the Right-of-Way, passed on second and final reading in July 2020. The Building Department handles permits; the City of Dumas Building Permits and Inspections page gives its hours as Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The sections listed below speak of right-of-way work in general and do not name cranes, so ask the department whether a crane setup in a street needs a permit before you fix a date.
Beyond the right-of-way, State and federal rules carry the job. Moves over legal size need TxDMV permits, and TxDMV links its permit restrictions for the Amarillo district, which TxDOT says includes Moore County. The six-foot zone around a high-voltage line comes from the Texas Health and Safety Code, chapter 752, which reaches any job where a person, a tool or the load could get that close, and the FAA's 14 CFR 77.9 decides whether a tall boom near Moore County Airport needs notice. Before the lift we run both checks, lines and airport, and say who has to arrange each item; the statutes and rules themselves sit in our rules guide for permits, power lines and airports.
- Section 3.031(a): the City issues no right-of-way work permit until the applicant has called the state's "Call Before You Dig" line at 811.
- Section 3.031(a)(2): routine work still needs a permit if it breaks pavement, closes a nonresidential traffic lane, or involves excavation or boring.
- Section 3.031(h): permit requests are due at least ten working days before the work is to start.
- Section 3.032(b): the applicant pays a $250 inspection fee.
- Section 3.033(a): public works gets 48 hours' notice that construction is ready to proceed.
- Section 3.033(e): "Lane closures on major thoroughfares will be limited after 9:00 a.m. and before 3:30 p.m.," with 36-inch reflector cones and arrow boards required.
- FAA rule 14 CFR 77.7: a required Form 7460-1 goes in 45 days or more before the proposed construction or alteration starts.
Dumas FAQs
Do you bring cranes to Dumas from Amarillo?
Yes. Everything comes up from Amarillo, 45 miles south of Dumas by the City's count, on US 87 and US 287. Truck and all-terrain cranes make that drive under their own power, while rough-terrain cranes, carry decks, crawler parts and rental machines travel on trailers, with a TxDMV permit for any load over the legal size or weight. The written quote prices the trip as its own line, beside the crane or machine, the operator if one comes with it, and any permits, escorts or mats.
Is there a Dumas permit for setting a crane in the street?
Ask the City of Dumas Building Department before you set a date. Ordinance 1180 requires a permit for right-of-way work that breaks pavement, closes a nonresidential traffic lane, or involves excavation or boring, with requests due at least ten working days ahead. The sections we read do not mention cranes by name, so the department decides whether your setup is covered. For lane closures, the ordinance says those on major thoroughfares "will be limited after 9:00 a.m. and before 3:30 p.m."
Can a crane work near the Moore County Airport in Dumas?
Yes, once the FAA's notice rule has been checked. The Dumas EDC's Moore County Airport page places the airport, identifier DUX, 2 miles west of town. The FAA's notice rule, 14 CFR 77.9, reaches any structure or equipment rising more than 200 feet above the ground where it stands, and, around a covered airport with a runway over 3,200 feet long, anything that would break through the rule's 100-to-1 imaginary surface, which runs 20,000 feet out from the nearest runway. When notice applies, the Form 7460-1 filing is due 45 days or more ahead of the lift, so a tall pick near the airport goes on the calendar early.
How does wind affect crane work in Dumas?
Wind can stop a pick, and the decision is made on site. Under OSHA's section 1926.1417(n) the competent person "must adjust the equipment and/or operations to address the effect of wind, ice, and snow," and section 1926.1431 calls for a qualified person's review before workers are lifted in a platform when wind there exceeds 20 mph. Amarillo's National Weather Service normals put the yearly average at 13.6 mph, with March and April the windiest months. A pick that wind or weather makes unsafe is called off and moved to a calmer day, and the written quote sets out beforehand how any standby time is charged.
